Educating, coaching and mentoring young people through the art of Capoeira
CapoeiraYouth as an After School Programme/Youth Club
Our after school programme is designed to give the young people an inspiring, multi faceted activity when school finishes. CapoeiraYouth is comprised of:
- Teambuilding
- Resolving feelings of conflict and anger
- Understanding the effects of peer pressure
- Negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Confidence and self-esteem
Because many of the young people in our programmes are relatively new to the country and are still struggling with the English language, Youth For Youth now also aims to tutor all our young people in English.
We are currently running an after school programme at Rokeby Centre, Stratford (for more information contact us) in partnership with Community Links. This programme is open to all young people of the community.
CapoeiraYouth as PE (Physical Education)
CapoeiraYouth as PE follows the same structure as the afterschool programme but can also include more general fitness.
For ALL young people, we will provide the above but will/can also include general fitness training (our instructor is REPS level 3 advanced personal trainer qualification) and design (together with staff) a programme that fits in with each group of young people.
We might focus more on the dance with some students, whereas others might prefer the martial arts part of Capoeira.
Within our delivery of PE we can also include basic Brazilian Jui Jutsu and basic boxing/sparring. Basically we can tailor any programme depending on the wishes and needs of the young people and their school.
MentoringYouth
Part of Youth For Youth's mission is to develop leaders through our programmes and to offer the young people a way to teach other what they have learnt themselves through being part of our programmes.
In September 2009, we will begin a new project where young people from the previous programmes (who have shown exceptional skills, both physically and through leadership and dedication) will get the opportunity to become youth leaders and coaches themselves.
They will go through weeks of mentoring training, followed by practical and physical training to become Capoeira coaches.
ExchangeYouth
Youth For Youth are currently developing a programme where young coaches from Colombia will have an opportunity to come for 1 year to volunteer as coaches here in the UK whilst getting a chance to study English.
The young people will be recruited within the programmes in Colombia to give disadvantaged youth a chance not only to travel, but also to study.
This structure if successful, might also be developed for UK youth to do in Colombia.
Colombia
In Bogotá, Colombia we have developed 3 different CapoeiraYouth programmes in 3 different locations/boroughs. They operate on a daily basis following the same structure as those in London.
We work in partnership with Apoyo Humano, who provides administrative and technical support to the instructors and coordinators. Our aim is that by 2010, we can open additional programmes in Medellin.
